Today the students used Chex Mix and chocolate chips to represent digit values up to the one millions place. It was a great way to use all the skills we learned from this week: place value, digit values, comparing numbers, and rounding! Plus, it was a great afternoon snack!
Today we reviewed our class procedures by creating classroom maps. Here is a student sample! They did such a great job! As students designed away, we reviewed area and perimeter. The students discussed ways one could measure the area of the room. First we had to determine the length of our two walls! The students came up with two very bright ideas all on their own! One method was to measure one brick and multiply it by the number of bricks on the wall. The second method was to line up all the rulers along the wall and total them. Volunteers tried out each way! Finally, we were able to solve for the area of the room (area= a x b). We came up with about 841 squared feet. Like the activity? I purchased from TPT! This week we began our first teacher read-aloud text, The Chocolate Touch by Patrick Skene Catling. This hilarious novel is about a young boy named John Midas, who has an extreme obsession with chocolate! His parents and Dr. Cranium try to convince him that only eating chocolate can have bad effects on the body, but he will not listen to them. Will he ever learn? Today the students listened to chapter 2, and made predications for the upcoming chapters! We had some very creative ideas!
We had a FABULOUS first day in the 4th grade! The students created "All About Me" selfies, described their summer vacations, shared some facts about themselves, and set some goals for the upcoming school year!
